Gambit is getting his own spinoff from the X-Men franchise starring Channing Tatum, and we're now learning that his movie will indeed be an origin story.

According to ComicBook.com, the solo movie now has a first draft, with writer Josh Zetumer having completed it recently. Tatum said it's "killer," and while the movie will be an origin story, it will be tackled in an interesting way that subverts some of our expectations.

"We're going to be changing some of the tropes of these movies," Tatum said.

The actor also said that he loves Gambit as a character, and that he's always felt like the most real of the X-Men: a tortured soul who's neither a clearly good or bad guy. "He walks his own path," Tatum said. "And of course he plays cards and drinks and is a martial-arts badass."

Gambit, who first appeared in Uncanny X-Men in 1990, is a mutant who has the ability to manipulate kinetic energy, and he's known for his skills at card-throwing. He has previously appeared on film in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, played by Taylor Kitsch.

Gambit opens on October 7, 2016, but we won't have to wait quite that long to see Tatum in action. According to Slashfilm, Gambit will make his on screen debut in X-Men: Apocalypse, which hits theaters on May 27, 2016.
