Tomorrowland, the new film from director Brad Bird and Disney’s second big blockbuster of the month, hits theaters this Memorial Day weekend. It won’t be anywhere near as big as the first one, Avengers Age of Ultron, despite the three-day weekend.

Industry analysts are expecting an opening of around $40 million to $50 million, which should be enough to knock Pitch Perfect 2 off its perch at the top.

The George Clooney-starring film’s opening could be hampered by some surprisingly mixed reviews from critics. As Bird’s first film since the acclaimed Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, there were high expectations, but some reviews have noted that it is a flawed movie.

HitFix’s Drew McWeeny called it “baffling on every level.” Joe Neumaier at the Daily News gave it two out of five stars, calling the plot convoluted. Variety’s Justin Chang suggests that the film was weighed down by ambitious attempts to have a larger theme to it.

The other new movie this week is the Poltergeist remake. The Fox 2000/MGM movie cost $35 million to make and Variety notes that it is expected to make just north of $20 million. That will probably put it behind Mad Max: Fury Road and Pitch Perfect 2.

Pitch Perfect 2 finished its first weekend with $69.2 million, so if it drops by a little less than half, it should make around $35 million over the long weekend.
