The Islamic State group claimed responsibility Tuesday for the shooting outside a venue that was hosting a cartoon drawling contest of the Prophet Muhammad.

CNN noted that in an audio clip on the group’s radio station the announcer said that two of its soldiers were the gunmen responsible for the attack. Those gunmen have been identified as Elton Simpson and Nadir Soofi, who were both shot and killed by police after opening fire on a security guard.

"We say to the defenders of the cross, the U.S., that future attacks are going to be harsher and worse,” the announcer warned. “The Islamic State soldiers will inflict harm on you with the grace of God. The future is just around the corner."

As previously reported, on Sunday, the security official was wounded outside the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland where the contest staged by the American Freedom Defense Initiative was being held.

Both Simpson and Soofi lived in Phoenix and on Monday the FBI confirmed that it had searched an apartment there. It is unknown at this time if the suspected gunmen received direction from the group or planned the attack on their own.
