Jason Momoa is reportedly in talks to join MGM’s Magnificent Seven remake, which will be directed by Antoine Fuqua and stars Denzel Washington.
News about Momoa’s casting was first reported by the Hollywood Reporter. TheWrap also reported that Momoa is in talks for a role in the film.
Magnificent Seven’s all-star cast already includes Washington, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D'Onofrio, Chris Pratt, Haley Bennett and WAgner Moura. The script was written by John Lee Hancock and Nic Pizzolatto.
The new film follows the same format as the original 1960 Western, which was a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai. A town is desperate for protection from villains, so residents hire skilled fighters to protect them. At first, they are apprehensive to do so, but they learn to like the town and do fight after all.
Momoa is expected to be a member of the villain group, but not the main villain. That part hasn’t been cast yet.
Momoa really shot to fame after his role on the first season of Game of Thrones and currently stars on SundanceTV’s The Red Road. Warner Bros. and DC Comics have picked him to play Aquaman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, The Justice League and a solo Aquaman movie.
Production on Magnificent Seven should start later this month.
