Secretary of State John Kerry suffered a broken leg after a bike accident during a trip to Europe.
The New York Times reported Kerry was conscious after the accident while he was cycling in Scionzier, France. He was taken to a Geneva hospital but will be returning to the U.S. to receive care in Boston.
He had been in Europe to participate in official meetings, including a Paris gathering with foreign ministers to discuss how to confront ISIS. While he will not be going to Paris afterall, Kerry will still attend the event via videoconference.
While he had been busy with meetings, he had nothing planned for Sunday when he decided to go cycling.
CNN reported that the location of his injury to his right femur is near the area where he had previously had hip surgery, so he will return to see the doctor who performed that surgery.
John Kirby, a spokesman for the State Department, said “Secretary Kerry is in good spirits and is grateful to the French and Swiss authorities, doctors, and nurses who assisted him after the accident.
Kerry had been in Geneva to discuss Iran’s nuclear program with diplomats from the country.
