A Topeka, Kansas waitress claims that she was waiting on Gov. Sam Brownback on Saturday and told the Republican to tip the schools. That was in reference to Brownback’s recent controversial moves to change how public education is funded in the state.
Chloe Hough wrote on Facebook Saturday night that she had a “911 emergency” because Brownback walked into Boss Hawg’s Barbeque during her last shift. “What should I say to him. This is not a test. Go,” she wrote. Thirty minutes later, she posted a picture of the receipt, which shows that a “Sam Brownback” did pay the check with a credit card.
Under the total, Hough wrote an “x” through the tip line. “Tip the schools,” Hough wrote next to the line.
Hough later told KSNT that Brownback came during her last shift at the restaurant, since she had just quit after working there for a year.
“It was my last shift at the restaurant as I had quit so it worked out nicely,” she said. “I just knew I had to say something or I would regret it.”
She told the network that she was particularly angry with Brownback’s “block grant” bill, which changes how funding is formulated for schools. The bill was passed less than a week after it was first introduced, even though educators and administrators were against it.
“The way I understand it, 0% of Kansas educators voted in favor of it,” Hough told KSNT.
In an interview with KWCH, Hough added, “I think education is the foundation for a better country and more progressive society.”
Brownback’s office has not responded to the story.
