King Kong is returning to Universal Studios Orlando, just in time for a new movie that’s coming out in 2017. The resort announced plans for Skull Island: Reign of Kong, a new ride that will open in summer 2016.
The new ride is significantly different than the old Kong ride that resided at the original Universal Studios Orlando theme park. While that one took audiences through New York City during when Kong was on the loose, this one will take visitors to Kong’s home, Skull Island. The new ride will also be located at the Islands of Adventure park.
Universal Creative worked with Peter Jackson, who directed the 2005 Kong remake, to design the new ride.
“King Kong is a Hollywood movie legend and a huge part of both our history and our future,” Universal Creative Executive Producer Mike West said in a statement. “He gives us the opportunity to tap into everything that makes our film history so special and everything that makes our theme park attractions so spectacular. We can’t wait to bring him to life in such an epic way.”
King Kong first roared on the screen in 1933, then again in 1976. Jackson’s film was noted for its visual effects and won three technical Oscars. Hopefully, the ride will take less time than it does to watch Jackson’s movie.
Universal Studios and Legendary are currently working on Kong: Skull Island, which stars Tom Hiddleston and opens on March 10. 2017.
