The nation’s second-largest city and one of the most expensive has voted and approved of raising minimum wage from $9 an hour to $15 within the next few years.

The Associated Press noted that on Tuesday, the Los Angeles City Council voted for the increase to take effect by the year 2020. The increases will start at $10.50 an hour in July 2016, then increase annually to $12, $13.25, $14.25 and finally $15.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the council voted 14-1 for the measure and now joins Chicago, San Francisco and Seattle, as another major U.S. city which voted to increase hourly wages.

"Make no mistake," said Councilman Paul Krekorian, who was instrumental in shaping the wage increase plan's final form. "Today the city of Los Angeles, the second biggest city in the nation, is leading the nation."

Only time will tell if neighboring cities in Southern California will follow suit. And, on the East Coast, some may be wondering if the largest city in the country will also increase hourly pay above the $9 it is due to rise to next year … it’s your move New York.
