The man who shot at George Zimmerman last week had recently been admitted to a mental institution and obsessed over a feud with him, according to a police report of the incident.
The Associated Press noted that the Lake Mary Police Department report said Matthew Apperson, who is accused of shooting at Zimmerman, exhibited signs of paranoia, anxiety and bipolar disorder.
The report goes on to say that the 36-year-old Apperson pulled up next to Zimmerman’s vehicle last Monday and shouted obscenities at him.
Zimmerman told detectives that Apperson then screamed, "You owe me your life. The only reason I didn't press charges on you is because I wanted to kill you myself."
Apperson was referring to an altercation the two had last year when he claimed that Zimmerman threatened him.
As previously reported, Apperson was arrested Friday and charged with aggravated assault and battery with a deadly weapon and firing a deadly missile into an occupied vehicle. He was released Saturday on $35,000 bond and ordered to turn in his firearms.
This is not the first time Zimmerman’s name has been in the news since he was acquitted in the death of Trayvon Martin two years ago. He also made headlines for allegedly threatening his ex-girlfriend and destroying his ex-wife’s property. Charges in those cases, however, were dropped after witnesses refused to testify.
