Marvel is reportedly interested in getting Selma director Ava DuVernay to direct either Black Panther or Captain Marvel.
This report comes from TheWrap, which cited “multiple individuals” and claims that Marvel is “courting” the filmmaker. The site adds that Marvel has talked with the filmmaker about these two properties, but they are still considering other directors.
It’s clear that Marvel is going out of its way to get a female filmmaker to take the reigns of Captain Marvel, which will be the studio’s first solo woman superhero movie. They’ve already hired Meg LeFauve and Nicole Perlman to write the script. There was also a rumor last month that Angelina Jolie was being considered for the job, but that’s clearly not going to happen.
DuVernay got her start in Hollywood in the publicity department, but in 2006, she started directing shorts and documentaries. In 2010, she made her feature debut with I Will Follow and followed that with 2012’s Middle of Nowhere. In 2014, she made her big Hollywood studio debut with Selma, which was nominated for the Best Picture Oscar. She is reportedly working on a new feature set during Hurricane Katrina that will star David Oyelowo.
Black Panther will star Chadwick Boseman as the title character and is set to hit theaters in July 2018. Captain Marvel still doesn’t have a star and won’t hit theaters until November 2018.
Marvel didn’t comment on the report, so this is still a rumor.
