Ariel Winter, one of the stars of ABC’s Modern Family, is now an emancipated minor, following a nasty dispute between her mother and older sister in 2012.
Winter, 17, announced the news on Twitter, thanking her “amazing support system and lovely people in my life who have given me the support and guidance to have been given this wonderful opportunity.” She thanked her sister, Shanelle Gray, and her father for their support.
“Thank you to all of my family, friends, and fans who have supported me through all of my endeavors in life, and have encouraged me. Thank you for making my life so special! I can't wait to embark on my new adventures,” Winter wrote.
Back in 2012, her mother, Chrisoula Workman, lost custody of Winter after there were allegations that she was being physically and mentally abused by her mother. Gray was granted custody, but Workman continued to fight the allegations until May 2014, when she reached a settlement.
She has been able to put the difficult times behind her. Last month, she went to her prom with her boyfriend and shared a photo with her father, Glenn Workman.
Winter plays Alex Dunphy on Modern Family, which will be back for a seventh season this fall.
