No criminal charges will be brought against Madison Police Officer Matt Kenny for the shooting death of Tony Robinson.

The Wisconsin State Journal reported that District Attorney Ismael Ozanne announced on Tuesday that charges would not be filed against Kenny and said that his use of deadly force was in self-defense.

"I conclude that this tragic and unfortunate death was the result of a lawful use of deadly police force and that no charges should be brought against Officer Kenny in the death of Tony Robinson Jr.," Ozanne said. "I am concerned that recent violence around our nation is giving some in our communities a justification for fear, hatred and violence. I am reminded that true and lasting change does not come from violence, but from exercising our voices and our votes.”

CNN noted that the fatal shooting happened on March 6 and sparked several protests in the city, just as other protests have taken place in the nation after the deaths of black men at the hands of police officers. Robinson was biracial.

An autopsy revealed that Robinson was shot in the head, torso and arm. Police said that he hit Kenny in the head and knocked him off balance during the confrontation.
