What was expected to be a close two-horse race turned into an easy victory for Pitch Perfect 2. The Universal sequel to 2012’s surprise musical hit left Mad Max: Fury Road and Avengers: Age of Ultron in the dust.
The film, starring Anna Kendrick and directed by actor/producer Elizabeth Banks, started off well Thursday night and the gap between it and Mad Max continued to grow as the weekend wore on. According to Rentrak data, Pitch Perfect 2 finished with $70.3 million domestically, which is more than the original’s entire run.
Add in the foreign box office, and the film is already up to $108.4 million worldwide.
George Miller’s Mad Max, which is the fourth film in his post-apocalyptic series and first since 1985, finished with $44.4 million. That’s a great start for an R-rated action movie and considering the film’s stellar reviews, it should hang around for awhile. With foreign box office, it is up to $109.4 million worldwide.
Avengers: Age of Ultron cooled off a bit, falling to third with $38.8 million. That brings it up to $372 million in North America. It has officially reached $1.1 billion worldwide.
Hot Pursuit came in fourth with $5.7 million, while Furious 7 hung around again with $3.6 million. (Furious 7 has reached $343.7 million in North America and $1.4 billion worldwide.)
