Part of what made the first Pitch Perfect a hit was its soundtrack and while Pitch Perfect 2 didn’t need it, the success of its own soundtrack certainly doesn’t hurt. The soundtrack for the new movie debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart.
The album moved 107,000 units during the week ending on May 17, according to Nielsen Music numbers for Billboard. Actual album sales made up 92,000 of that total.
At the box office, Pitch Perfect 2 has already out-grossed the original 2012 film’s entire domestic run with $70 million this past weekend.
The first Pitch Perfect soundtrack sold 1.2 million copies, but only peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200. It featured Anna Kendrick’s hit “Cups,” which has sold 2.1 million downloads.
Mumford & Sons’ Wilder Mind, which was No. 1 last week, fell to No. 2 with just 58,000 total units.
The only other debut in the Top 10 was Incubus’ Trust Fall (Side A) EP, which moved 40,000 units.
It’s worth noting that there are three soundtracks in the Top 5 - Pitch Perfect 2, Furious 7 and Fifty Shades of Grey. The last time that happened was in September 2007, when Miley Cyrus was still Hannah Montana and High School Musical was still a big thing.
