Authorities said that a convicted killer, who escaped from an Ohio prison more than half a century ago, has finally been captured in Florida.
The Huffington Post reported that when the U.S. Marshals Service and deputies in Brevard County showed up at Frank Freshwaters’ home in Melbourne he revealed his true identity and was quickly arrested. The now 79-year-old man had been living under the alias William Harold Cox.
"This is definitely one of the oldest cases we’ve solved," said U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott. "The cold case gives us a fresh set of eyes that looks at this 100 percent of the time. That led to his doorstep in Florida. We worked with Florida authorities on it, and in the end, [Freshwaters] admitted to everything."
Back in 1957, Freshwaters pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter after an auto accident. He initially received five years’ probation after a 20-year sentence was suspended. However, that sentence was reinstated in 1959 when he violated parole. He was sent to the Ohio State Reformatory and later the Sandusky Honor Farm where he fled that same year.
CNN noted that the Ohio State Reformatory is the where the 1994 film The Shawshank Redemption was shot.
