Tinker Bell will be the latest classic Disney animated character to get the live action treatment. The studio has cast Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon to play the Peter Pan pixie.
The casting was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, which notes that Witherspoon will produce with her Pacific Standard production partner Bruna Papandrea. Victoria Strouse, who worked with Pixar on the Finding Dory script, has been assigned to write the script.
Titled Tink, the film still doesn’t have a director attached. It will be similar to Maleficent, in that it will explore the story of a character not fleshed out in an animated film. (In Maleficent’s case, it looked at the villain from Sleeping Beauty.) However, unlike Maleficent, Tink will have a much smaller budget.
Disney turned Tinker Bell into a major star in 1953 with their animated adaptation of the J.M. Barrie story. She since became a corporate symbol for the studio and even got her own series of CGI direct-to-video movie franchise.
This is, of course, just the latest Disney live action project with animated roots. Cinderella has passed $500 million worldwide and Beauty and the Beast is currently in production. Other planned projects include The Jungle Book, Winnie The Pooh, Mulan and Pinocchio.
Witherspoon has an Oscar for Walk The Line and was just nominated for her performance in Wild. She can be seen opposite Sofia Vergara in Hot Pursuit. She is also working on a TV series with Nicole Kidman.
