Get ready for more stylized action courtesy of Robert Rodriguez. The director has been hired to helm a live-action adaptation of Jonny Quest for Warner Bros.
The film will bring to life the beloved 1964 Hanna-Barbera cartoon, which tells the story of Jonny Quest and his adventures with his father Benton, his friend Hadji, bodyguard Race Bannon and their dog Bandit. While it only lasted a season, there were revivals in the ‘80s and ‘90s and Hollywood was interested. However, Warner Bros., which owns the rights to Hanna-Barbera cartoons, hadn’t been able to get the film off the ground until now.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Terry Rossio (Pirates of the Caribbean, The Mask of Zorro) is writing a new draft of the screenplay with Rodriguez. Dan Mazeau wrote the first draft.
Dan Lin and Adrian Askarieh are producing, notes Variety.
Of course, Rodriguez is best known for his more recent violent movies, like Machete and Sin City. But his resume does include the Spy Kids movies, so that probably convinced Warner Bros. that he could take this family-friendly project.
Hopefully Rodriguez could get his friend Quentin Tarantino to direct a Space Ghost movie.
