One of the most renowned cinematographers of our time joins the sequel to one of the most influential sci-fi films of all time. Roger Deakins reunites with director Denis Villeneuve to shoot his upcoming Blade Runner sequel.
Deadline reported on Deakin's latest job, which was announced at the Cannes Film Festival. This is where Villeneuve and Deakins premiered their second film together, Sicario, yesterday and is slated for an awards-friendly September 18 release.
Production on the Blade Runner sequel begins next summer. Harrison Ford is slated to return as Rick Deckard, and Hampton Fancher, co-writer of the original, and Michael Green also penned this new movie>. It takes place several decades after Ridley Scott's first movie and Ford called the script "the best thing I've ever read," in December to MTV. The story for the sequel comes from Scott and Fancher.
Although the report fails to mention Ryan Gosling's name, The Wrap reports the actor is still in negotiations to star in the new movie.
The 12-time Oscar-nominated cinematographer comes from another Academy Award-nomination earlier this year for Angelina Jolie's Unbroken. He was also recently nominated for his astounding work behind-the-camera with Skyfall a couple years back.
He recently returned to work with the Coen brothers on next year's Hail Caesar!. The D.P. lensed nearly all of the sibling's films, although he took a leave of absence on Inside Llewyn Davis to make the last Bond feature. He was also announced to return to work with Jolie on her Richard Leakey biopic Africa, although word of late suggests there may be problems getting that movie in front of cameras.
