Bob Dylan made his first appearance on The Late Show in over 20 years and couldn’t have picked a better time. Last night was David Letterman’s next to last show and to say goodbye to the legendary host, the legendary singer/songwriter said goodbye with an old standard.

Dylan performed a mournful version of “The Night We Called It A Day,” a song he recorded for Shadows in the Night, which came out in February. Frank Sinatra first recorded the song in 1942.

This was Dylan’s first appearance on The Late Show since November 1993. He also appeared on NBC’s Late Night when Letterman hosted in 1984 and 1992.

It was the best way to end a rowdy night that started with a surprise appearance from Regis Philbin, had Bill Murray coming out of a cake and an interview with Paul Schieffer, who is on the show every day anyway.

Since Dylan didn’t sit down with Letterman for an interview, Schieffer took the slot and recalled meeting Dylan for the first time.

Here’s Dylan’s performance:

Letterman’s final show is tonight. CBS is keeping the guests a surprise.
