If you still want some things in Star Wars: The Force Awakens to be a surprise when you see it on Dec. 18, it would be a good idea to avoid picking up the new issue of Vanity Fair. The magazine has now confirmed what roles Adam Driver, Lupita Nyong’o and Gwendoline Christie will have in the new movie.
Earlier Monday, Vanity Fair posted a behind-the-scenes video for photographer Annie Leibovitz's cover and inside photos. The video teased roles for Driver and Nyong’o, but now that the images are up, Vanity Fair confirmed the speculation.
Driver is officially playing Kylo Ren, the film’s villain who gets to carry a three-pronged lightsaber. He’s the leader of the First Order and is very angry about something. He’s got a base on a frozen planet. (Is it Hoth? Probably not.)
Nyong’o, who won an Oscar for 12 years A Slave, is playing a CGI-animated character named Maz Katana. She’s apparently a chief outlaw with a castle. Leibovitz got a picture of the denizens of the castle, who are clearly wearing physical alien masks.
Next, Vanity Fair revealed that Christie, who can currently be seen on Game of Thrones, is playing Captain Phasma, a member of the New Order. She gets to wear a super shiny chrome Stormtrooper outfit and a cape. She was seen in the second trailer that was shown at Star Wars Celebration last month.
Vanity Fair also featured photos of Oscar Isaac as pilot Poe Decameron and Daisy Ridley playing Rey. Another shot shows John Williams, Kathleen Kennedy, Lawrence Kasdan and director J.J. Abrams.
The Force Awakens hits theaters on Dec. 18. You can get the new Vanity Fair issue on May 12.
