Officials have said that a Taiwanese exchange student, who was gored by a bison in Yellowstone National Park, has undergone surgery and is now recovering.

Reuters reported that the 16-year-old girl was hiking with her host family Friday afternoon on Geyser Trail and when they stopped to have a picture taken the animal attacked her.

"The girl turned her back to the bison to have her picture taken when the bison lifted its head, took a couple steps and gored her," the park service said.

Spokeswoman Traci Weaver said that the girl sustained injuries to her buttocks and was air-lifted to a hospital.

CNA noted that the teenager’s injuries were not life threatening, but did require surgery and Taiwan's Ministry of Education said Sunday that she is resting at the home of her host family.

The Park Service stated that the family was standing very close to the bison prior to the attack. According to park regulations, due to the animals’ unpredictable behavior visitors must stay at least 25 yards away from bison and elk and 100 yards away from bears and wolves.
