Edward Zwick is a director whose films you know better than his name. He's the filmmaker behind a variety of features, like the original About Last Night... to Glory to Legends of the Fall to The Siege to Blood Diamond, just to name a few. Now he reunites with his The Last Samuari star Tom Cruise to make the thriller sequel Jack Reacher 2.
Although Christopher McQuarrie — who helms the upcoming Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation with Cruise — wrote and directed the first movie, Zwick soon takes over the duties, with him and Marshall Herskovitz also set to re-write Richard Wenk's (The Equalizer) screenplay. Zwick and Herskovitz previously wrote Love and Other Drugs and The Last Samurai together. When production plans to start or why McQuarrie is not back to write or direct are questions unanswered in Deadline's report.
Based on the Lee Child book series, the first Jack Reacher took from the novel One Shot, while this movie is inspired by Never Go Back, according to Variety. The sequel follows Reacher as he travels from South Dakota to the Virgina headquarters of the U.S. Army Military Police Corps, to find his new commanding officer arrested.
While McQuarrie is not on board as writer or director, he is still here as an executive producer, with Cruise and Don Granger. This is Zwick's follow-up to Pawn Sacrifice, starring Tobey Maguire and Liev Schreiber, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and comes to theaters on September 18. Jack Reacher 2 also is the filmmaker's first sequel.
