Universal Pictures started work on Mena, the latest film starring Tom Cruise, and has set the film’s supporting cast. The movie isn’t the typical action film that Cruise usually makes these days and reunites him with Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman.

Cruise joined the film in January. He stars as Barry Seal, a pilot hired by the CIA for reconnaissance in Central America, but then got stuck in a covert operation. He was shot and killed by the Medellin cartel.

The film was written by Gary Spinelli and it will be financed by Cross Creek Pictures. Imagine Entertainment and Quadrant Pictures are co-producing.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the supporting cast now includes Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad), Caleb Landry Jones (Contraband) and Lola Kirke (Gone Girl). Previously cast actors include Domhnall Gleeson, Sarah Wright, Jayma Mays, Alejandro Edda, E. Roger Mitchell and Benito Martinez.

Universal might not have high awards aspirations for the film. It will be released on Jan. 6, 2017, likely in the hope that it can catch fire like American Sniper did. However, unlike that film, there’s no current plans for a limited December run that would help it qualify for the Oscars.
