Tom Hardy already did one comic book movie, but his role as Bane in The Dark Knight Returns didn’t exactly highlight his full range of talent. That’s why many want to see him take another role in a comic book franchise and it sounds like he wants one, too.

Hardy was very close to playing Rick Flagg in Warner Bros. and DC Comics’ Suicide Squad film, but he left and was replaced by Joel Kinnaman. Hardy reportedly left because of issues with the script and his busy schedule, which included the long shoot on Alejandro G. Inarritu’s The Revenant.

In an interview with Collider this week, the Mad Max: Fury Road star said he was “bummed out” by not getting to star in Suicide Squad. He was really excited about working with Will Smith and being in a movie with The Joker and Harley Quinn.

“I wanted to work on that and I know the script is really f**king alley and I also know what’s gonna happen with The Joker and Harley Quinn in that; I won’t give away too much…it’s f**king alley,” Hardy said. “And that whole territory is something that I would certainly—I mean, everybody loves The Joker. Everybody loves The Joker. Will Smith is a dope guy, but everybody loves The Joker and that’s gonna, I think, be a very important film for fans.”

Hardy later said that he for “ass-slammed technically out of Suicide Squad” because of The Revenant. So you can blame Inarritu for not seeing Hardy in the film next year.

In another part of the interview with Collider, Hardy said that he really wants to play Marvel’s Punisher character. Hardy thinks he’s a bit too short for the role, though, at 5’ 9”.

“I want The Punisher… I want The Punisher, or Splinter Cell, I want something…I don’t know what I want,” Hardy said.

That also means that he still wants to make the long-gestating Splinter Cell movie, which would be based on the popular video games.
