Avengers: Age of Ultron can’t have every character in it, so Loki was the casualty. Writer/director Joss Whedon said that they actually did film a scene with Tom Hiddleston, but it ended up getting cut.

In an interview with MTV News, Whedon said that the scene “didn’t play” and he decided that the movie already had enough in it.

“The movie has so much. It’s so filled,” Whedon said. “We didn’t want it to feel overstuffed. I really wanted to have Loki in it, but I understood the decision that there were now too many voices in the chorus.”

Whedon later joked, “At some point the embarrassment of riches is actually embarrassing.”

Considering that the cut released to theaters is already 140 minutes, the decision to cut Loki was probably for the best. Plus, we already know that Disney and Marvel are planning to release and extended edition on home video with an alternate ending. So, Hiddleston fans will probably get to see the scene anyway.

Oh, and Hiddleston is supposed to appear in Thor: Ragnarok. There will be plenty of other opportunities for Marvel’s team to give Hiddleston more screen time.
