Tomorrowland may have won the box office this weekend, but there is little chance that Disney is doing much celebrating. The film only narrowly beat holdover Pitch Perfect 2.
According to early studio estimates, Tomorrowland, which stars George Clooney and Under The Dome’s Britt Robertson, only made $32.2 million over the three-day weekend. Analysts expect it to each at least $50 million over the four-day Memorial Day holiday.
Tomorrowland was hurt by a number of issues. First, it wasn’t released in 3D, although there were still IMAX screenings. In addition, the trailers never really made it clear what exactly the film was about, which could have backfired. Audiences do need to have some kind of an idea of what they’re in for. Lastly, the mixed reviews couldn’t have helped.
The film did get a boost overseas, opening to $26.7 million.
Coming in a close second was Pitch Perfect 2 with $30.3 million. That film opened the weekend before with just under $70 million, which was already more than the first film’s entire domestic run. It’s now up to $117.8 million and has also grossed $61.7 million overseas.
Mad Max: Fury Road also held on strong with $23.8 million. After two weeks, it’s up to $87.3 million, which is fantastic for an R-rated action movie.
The Fox/MGM remake of Poltergeist scared up $23 million in its opening weekend. Avengers: Age of Ultron rounded out the Top 5 with $20.8 million.
Ultron was still the top-grossing film worldwide this weekend. It is up to $1.26 billion worldwide, with just $404 million of that from North America.
