It’s a star-studded weekend at the box office. The latest releases feature celebrity casts including a comedy, drama and superhero sequel.
Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye join forces on the big screen once again in Avengers: Age of Ultron. This time, the superheroes are protecting the planet from the evil Ultron, battling robots out to destroy humans. The PG-13 sci-fi adventure features a star-studded cast which includes Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Paul Bettany, Stellan Skarsgård, Scarlett Johansson, Cobie Smulders, Chris Hemsworth, James Spader and Elizabeth Olsen. The two hour and twenty-one minute film is playing in conventional and 3D theaters.
An eccentric woman wins the lottery and starts some unconventional spending in Welcome to Me. An admirer of Oprah, she puts her newfound riches toward hosting her own talk show, but when she decides to stop taking her medication, the show becomes more of a trainwreck. Kristen Wiig, James Marsden Tim Robbins, Linda Cardellini, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Joan Cusack and Wes Bentley star in the one hour and twenty-eight minute comedic drama. The limited released film is rated R for sex, nudity, language and drugs.
A woman has trouble deciding which man she should pursue in Far from the Maddening Crowd. A sheep farmer, an irresponsible Sergeant and an affluent bachelor all have their eyes on her, but she needs to figure out where her love lies. The PG-13 film is based on Thomas Hardy’s novel and stars Carey Mulligan. The drama unfolds in one hour and fifty-eight minutes.
When her son drops out of college without telling her, a woman goes on a mission to find out why in Ride. She discovers that he left his school in New York to surf in California. While this overbearing mother attempts to bring him back, she tries new things and ends up learning more about herself. Helen Hunt and Luke Wilson star in the limited released comedy. The one hour and thirty-three minute film is rated R for language and drugs.
Celebrities filled the casts of this week’s new releases. Next week, they’re paired up as duos. Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara, Abigail Breslin and Arnold Schwarzenegger and Morgan Freeman and Diane Keaton are the tag teams hitting the big screen on May 8.
