A nuclear plant suffered a transformer fire in New York, causing concern for the environment.

According to CBSNewYork, the fire began Saturday at the Indian Point Nuclear Plant, but automatic sprinklers kept the fire at bay by the time firefighters arrived. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo went to the scene and discussed the concern due to the fire.

He reportedly said, “It has discharged foam. It has discharged oil. Now we’re worried about that leaking into the Hudson River- and the storm drains go down into the Hudson. So that would be a problem.”

The New York Department of Energy Conservation was at the scene and remained on alert to prevent oil from going into the river. The Indian Point nuclear plant is run by Entergy Corp. and their spokesman, Jerry Nappi, said there were safeguards for this type of fire, but that it is the first they have experienced.

“We have trained fire brigade on-site 24/7 for events like this.”

No one was hurt in the fire and that it occurred in a separate area away from the nuclear area of the plant.

WABC reported that part of the plant remained shut down today. The Indian Point Energy Twitter account posted that the plant was “in safe, stable condition.”
