U2 surprised New York City commuters on Monday by dressing up as street performers and performed a few of their past hits. It all appears to be a stunt for this Friday’s Tonight Show appearance, since Jimmy Fallon was also seen with them.
The group was seen at the Grand Central subway stop and video of them playing “Angel of Harlem” surfaced on Instagram thanks to a fan, notes Stereogum. According to the @U2 fansite, actress Lisa Whelchel tweeted that the group also performed “Beautiful Day” and the new single “Song for Someone.” Whelchel also posted photos, but has since deleted them.
Another fan who was on the subway platform tweeted a picture of Fallon, confirming that it was being taped for his show.
U2 was supposed to perform as the Tonight Show’s house band for a week last fall, when Songs of Innocence came out. However, Bono injured his hand, which forced the group to postpone their appearance and world tour.
