While Jurassic World is likely to still keep the box office crown, that doesn’t mean that Inside Out - Disney/Pixar’s first film in two years - won’t have a fantastic weekend. The film, which has received sterling reviews, just had the best Thursday for a Pixar movie.
Inside Out, which was directed by Up’s Pete Docter and features the voice of Amy Poehler, grossed $3.7 million form early Thursday night showings. As TheWrap points out, that’s the best start for Pixar and even the better than Disney Animation Studios early showings.
The previous Pixar champ was 2013’s Monsters University, which started with $2.6 million. The record-holder for best Disney Animation start is Big Hero 6’s $1.4 million Tuesday.
Another film that is expected to do well this weekend - althoguh on a much smaller scale - is Open Road Films’ Dope, which also earned great reviews adter Sundance. Accoding to The Hollywood Reporter, the film is expected to make around $7 million. It made $425,000 Thuesday night.
Inside Out is expected to finish the weekend with around $60 million, which will be nowhere near enough to stop Jurassic World in its tracks. World broke the debut record with $208.8 million, so even if it falls 50 percent, it will still make over $100 million in its second weekend.
Amazingly, despite the fantastic reviews, Inside Out will be the first ever Pixar release not to open up at No. 1.
