The defense attorneys for Aurora movie theater shooter James Holmes will have to try and refute a psychiatrist’s findings that their client was “legally sane” at the time he shot his victims.

The Associated Press reported that Dr. William Reid interviewed Holmes and testified that if he was suffering from a mental illness, he was “legally sane” at the time of the shooting.

A video played in court showed Holmes talking about his self-worth being heightened by killing others and how he felt nothing when he shot fellow moviegoers.

As previously reported, Holmes is on trial for his life after he admitted to opening fire in the Colorado theater three years ago during a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises. He fatally shot 12 people, wounded another 70 and was arrested shortly after.

His has plead guilty by reason of insanity, which make the doctor’s testimony and his defense team’s cross-examination so crucial and a key component of this case.

The defense will have a chance to call its own doctors and mental health experts to the stand later this month.
