With a month left in his six-month suspension without pay, NBC is still trying to figure out what to do with Brian Williams. The rumor mill has never stopped turning during the past five months, and the latest report claims that Williams’ attorney is responsible for making it hard for NBC to take the next step.

A network insider told The New York Daily News that Williams and his attorney, Robert Barnett, are making it hard for NBC to just move on. Talks between the two sides have become contentious.

However, another source called that “bogus” and a third said that “there’s no long game.” The one thing all three sources agreed on was that his fate will be decided “soon.”

This news comes just weeks after a CNNMoney report claimed that Williams’ next gig at NBC might not be NBC Nightly News anchor. They are trying to “think creatively” about what Williams’ new role at the network will be.

Williams was suspended for six months without pay in February after it turned out that he was embellishing a story about being in a helicopter in Iraq in 2003. Other stories he told during appearances on late night shows also came into question.

And in case anyone thinks Williams’ colleagues know more than we do, Today anchor Savannah Guthrie told TVNewser that this is not the case.

“I think, like everyone, we are waiting to see what our bosses decide and we hope for the best for everyone involved,” she told the site. “It’s not something that’s all-consuming for us. We care a lot about our friends at Nightly and everyone involved, but we’re just trying to go forward and put on a show.”
