Billionaire and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is vowing to sue Univision, which announced earlier today that it will not air the Miss USA pageant next month after his insulting comments about Mexican immigrants last week. The pageant also has to find a new co-host after actress Roselyn Sanchez dropped out.
As previously reported, Univision announced that it will cut all ties with the Trump Organization and the Miss Universe Organization. In addition, it will not air the Miss USA pageant on July 12. The network cited Trump’s “recent, insulting remarks about Mexican immigrants.”
Trump quickly bashed Univision on Twitter, claiming that he loves Mexico but was criticizing the trade agreements between Mexico and the U.S. However, he never apologized for his generalization during his presidential candidacy announcement, when he called Mexican immigrants “rapists” and said “they’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime.”
In an interview with Politico, Trump said that Univision is defaulting on an “iron-clad” five-year, $13.5 million deal that it can’t just cancel. “They have no termination rights whatsoever. They've defaulted on their contract because of pressure put on them by Mexico,” Trump said. Trump told Politico that the Mexican government and lobbyists pressured Univision to pull out of the deal.
Still, the Miss USA Pageant will need a new co-host. Sanchez sent a statement to Billboard, announcing her decision.
“I was very excited and proud to have been invited to participate in Miss USA, but as a Latina, that is now inconceivable,” Sanchez said. “Although I am not Mexican, I am Puerto Rican and a proud Latina, and his comments were an insult to our culture. I won't sponsor anything produced by Donald Trump.”
Trump could also have a problem with NBC, which co-owns the Miss Universe pageant. A source told The Hollywood Reporter that the network is “re-evaluating” its commitment. NBC also airs Celebrity Apprentice, another program they will have to “re-evaluate” with Trump running for President.
