Authorities said that at least 35 people were injured when one commuter bus rear-ended a tour bus while traveling inside the Lincoln Tunnel heading toward New York City.

Reuters noted that Joe Pentangelo, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said that the crash happened in the center of the tunnel around 9 a.m. Wednesday.

The Associated Press reported that officials said the crash occurred when the commuter bus struck the back of a bus carrying 26 students from Canada touring the city on a graduation trip.

The Toronto District School Board said that the students on the tour bus were not injured. However, as many as 35 to 40 people out of the 60 or so people aboard the commuter bus were.

Riders said that they were stuck on the bus until emergency personnel arrived because the door was jammed.

"We couldn't get out. The door was bent,” said passenger Jaehoon Chung. "Everyone was calm. We all waited until a cop came."

The crash has remains under investigation at this point.
