Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is keeping his streak going with San Andreas. The disaster movie shook up the box office this weekend, far exceeding expectations and leaving Cameron Crowe’s Aloha in the dust.
San Andreas, which got off to a hot start Thursday night, finished the weekend with an estimated $53.2 million. That’s more more than even what Warner Bros. expected and more than what Tomorrowland made over the four-day Memorial Day weekend.
It’s Johnson’s second bit hit of the year, following Universal’s Furious 7. That film finally fell out of the Top 10 this weekend, coming in at No. 11. It is now up to $349.2 million in North America and is up to over $1.5 billion worldwide.
Universal’s Pitch Perfect 2 continues to be a blockbuster success, reeling in $14.8 million this weekend. It’s now up to $147.5 million domestically, meaning that a Pitch Perfect 3 seems likely (although it probably wouldn’t be a good idea, story-wise).
Disney’s Tomorrowland fell to third with just $13.8 million in its second weekend. It’s now up to $63.2 million. That would probably sound better if the movie didn’t cost $180 million to make.
Mad Max: Fury road added $13.6 million, helping the movie pass the $115 million mark overall. Avengers: Age of Ultron stayed in the Top Five with $10.9 million, bringing its total to $427 million.
Sony’s Aloha, directed by Crowe, could not overcome bad press and poor reviews. It only made $10 million in its first weekend, despite starring Bradley Cooper, Rachel McAdams and Emma Stone.
