Eddie Van Halen appears to be interested in burning bridges more than trying to make friends. The Van Halen guitarist gave an interview to Billboard Magazine this week, in which he blasted bassist Michael Anthony and even said he can’t be friends with singer David Lee Roth.
In the interview, the guitarist claims that he had to teach Anthony everything and claimed that Anthony’s backing vocals weren’t a big part of the group’s signature sound. Anthony left the group in 2004 after a tour with singer Sammy Hagar, notes Rolling Stone. Anthony was replaced by Van Halen’s son, Wolfgang.
“Every note Mike ever played, I had to show him how to play,” Van Halen told Billboard. “Before we’d go on tour, he’d come over with a video camera and I’d have to show him how to play all the parts.”
When it comes to Anthony’s vocals, Van Halen said, “Mike’s voice is like a piccolo trumpet. But he’s not a singer. He just has a range from hell. Mike was just born with a very high voice. I have more soul as a singer than he does. And you know, people always talk about Mike’s voice on Van Halen songs, but that’s a blend of Mike’s voice and my voice. It’s not just him.”
Billboard did get a statement from Anthony, who was a bit more diplomatic. “I am proud to say that my bass playing and vocals helped create our sound,” he said. “I’ve always chosen to take the high road and stay out of the never-ending mudslinging, because I believe that it ultimately ends up hurting the Van Halen fans.”
Hagar though, was much more annoyed with Van Halen’s comments about Anthony. He even took to YouTube Fiday to post a two-minute video called “In Defense of Mikey.” Hagar called Van Halen’s comments “irritating” and called Anthony the “most loyal guy in the band.”
Here’s the video, which does feature some NSFW language (since that’s how rock stars talk):
Anthony wasn’t Van Halen’s only target in the Billboard interview. He said that Roth - who is now back in the band - “does not want to be my friend” and said that Roth needs to start acting his age. He also suggested that the reason why there won’t be another Van Halen studio album is because Roth likes dance music too much.
“It’s hard, because there are four people in this band, and three of us like rock’n’roll. And one of us likes dance music. And that used to kind of work, but now Dave doesn’t want to come to the table,” Van Halen said.
