Even though Pitch Perfect 2 didn’t exactly announce Elizabeth Banks as a new directing force for Hollywood to pay attention to, the actress already has another project to work on. She’s reportedly in talks to direct Red Queen for Universal, the same studio that released Pitch Perfect 2.

Red Queen will be based on the novel of the same name by Victoria Aveyard. According to Deadline, the script was penned by Gennifer Hutchison (Breaking Bad) and will be produced by Banks and Max Handelman’s Brownstone Productions with Benderspink.

This sounds like a much more ambitious project than Pitch Perfect 2. As The Hollywood Reporter points out, the story centers on a street urchin who, after saving her friend, meets the king and queen of a world split by the colors red and silver. She suddenly has magical powers, which the king tries to use, but she also starts helping a rebellion. Sounds like a great role for any young actress needing a breakthrough.

Banks’ Pitch Perfect 2 has been a global success, even more than the 2012 original film, which she co-produced. The film earned just under $70 million in its opening weekend, the second-best for a film directed by a female director. Universal has already started developing Pitch Perfect 3.
