The first trailer for Denis Villeneuve's Sicario was released by Lionsgate, giving audiences a taste of the film that earned acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival in May. Starring Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro, the film goes head first into the dangerous world of Mexican drug cartels.
For a film that premiered at Cannes, Sicario is surprisingly heavy on action, which is on full display in the trailer. Blunt plays Kate Macer, a young FBI agent who is recruited to join an elite task force on drugs. At first, she doesn’t think she’s up for it, but those around her think she is. She serves alongside agents played by BRolin and Del Toro, but it doesn’t look like their alliances are clear.
Sicario was nominated for the Palme D’Or, but didn’t win the prize. Still, it earned good reviews from critics. Like Villeneuve’s surprising hit Prisoners, the film was photographed by Roger Deakins.
Variety called the film “a blisteringly intense drug-trade thriller that combines expert action and suspense with another uneasy inquiry into the emotional consequences of violence.”
Lionsgate is releasing Sicario on Sept. 18.
