Three new wide releases hit theaters this weekend, including Melissa McCarthy’s Spy and the film follow-up to HBO’s Entourage. The third film is the latest in the Insidious horror series.
Spy is likely coming out on top. Directed by The Heat’s Paul Feig, the film has been earning much better reviews than McCarthy’s other recent efforts. Plus, the film co-stars Jude Law and Jason Statham, so action film enthusiasts will want to check out the skewering of their favorite genre. According to The Los Angeles Times, the 20th Century Fox film is expected to make around $30 million, but that seems a bit low. It’s definitely going to earn more than that.
Next up is Insidious: Chapter 3 from Universal’s Focus Features and Blumhouse. It only cost $10 million to make and will easily make more than that this weekend. The film should open at above $20 million, which would put it between Insidious and Insidious: Chapter 2, as EW points out.
Between Spy and Insidious 3 should be last week’s winner, San Andreas. Even if it makes half of what it made last week, it will still make $27 million.
Entourage will come in fourth. The film has been in theaters since Tuesday night. It earned $5.3 million from Tuesday and Wednesday showings. It has earned middling reviews, so anything over $15 million will be good for Warner Bros.
