Escaped prisoner Richard Matt was fatally shot on Friday and police are now pursuing fellow escapee David Sweat.

CNN noted that authorities confirmed Matt, one of the two men who broke out of the Clinton Correctional Facility nearly three weeks ago, was fatally shot by officials in Franklin County.

David Sweat, who also escaped the prison with Matt, is being currently being pursued by law enforcement in the same area.

This news follows earlier reports that authorities believed the men were heading towards the Canadian border.

As previously reported, Matt, 48 and Sweat, 34, orchestrated an elaborate escape from the facility in Dannemora on the weekend of June 5. They are believed to have used power tools allegedly supplied to them by two prison employees in a Shawshank Redemption-type break out.

Matt was serving a sentence of 25 years to life for the 1997 kidnapping, killing and dismembering of his former boss. And Sweat was serving a life sentence for murdering a law enforcement official.
