Twenty years after Independence Day became a global hit for 20th Century Fox, the studio is about to release the sequel that someone must have been waiting for. Last night, the studio hosted a live-stream Q&A event, in which director Roland Emmerich got to unveil the title. Unfortunately, it’s no longer called ID Forever.
The new title of the film is actually a bit more boring and sounds like the title for any random action movie. It will just be called Independence Day: Resurgence. The story will center on humans using the leftover alien technology to protect the planet. However, the aliens eventually decide to come back with an even bitter force. “Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction,” the studio says.
“We call it in the film the War of '96,” Emmerich said Monday, notes Empire. “It’s like a post-World generation that’s unified, and that's amazing to see a world come together with a common enemy. That's a resurgence.”
The session did include members of the cast, which includes original stars Jeff Goldblum, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, Bill Pullman and Brent Spiner. New members of the franchise include Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher, Sela Ward, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Maika Monroe. As we’ve known for awhile, Will Smith is not involved.
Filming is currently underway and the movie will hit theaters on June 24, 2016.
Fox also released a short teaser, which is just an animated version of the title.
