Inside Out, the first movie from Pixar since 2013, earned the best opening for an original film in 2015, but that still wasn’t enough to stop the Indominus Rex in its tracks. Jurassic World won the box office again, ending Pixar’s incredible winning streak.
World broke the box office debut record with $209 million. It fell a little more than half, grossing $102 million in its second weekend. That’s slightly less than The Avengers’ $103 million second weekend in 2012. Still, World and Avengers remain the only two films to earn over $100 million in their second weekends.
So while it didn’t set the second weekend record, World had an incredible week. The film’s domestic total is at $398.2 million and it could even reach $400 million after just 11 days. That’s quicker than Avengers to that mark.
Next up is Inside Out, which rode rave reviews all the way to the second-best Pixar opening in the studio’s history with $91 million. (The top opening is still owned by 2010’s Toy Story 3 with $110 million.) However, it is the first Pixar movie not to open at No. 1 but Disney has to be pleased. It did better than the studio expected, after all.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, 71 percent of the film’s audience came from families. Internationally, the film grossed $41 million from 37 markets.
Melissa McCarthy’s Spy came in third with $10.5 million. San Andreas with Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson came in fourth with $8.2 million.
Sundance hit Dope made a little less than what Open Road was expecting, only earning $6 million from 2,000 locations.
