It's pretty traditional for a superhero sequel to try to get far bigger than the first one, but actually, with Guardians of the Galaxy 2, James Gunn says there will be fewer characters this time than there were in the original.
According to Screen Rant, James Gunn said that he's sick of superhero sequels getting too sprawling and crazy, and so he wants to step things back with Guardians of the Galaxy 2.
"There’s just too many characters so you can’t concentrate on one and really get to know that character, and I really want to get to know the characters that we know better," he said.
It's not that there won't be any new additions, though, with Gunn going on to say that they will be introducing one new character.
Gunn was in some way responding to fans constantly asking about which big Marvel characters will appear in these new movies, but the director tried to focus us away from that line of thinking. He went on to say that he actually had one established Marvel character in his original draft, but the movie was getting too packed, so he had to take that character out. "And it’s a character I like a lot and hope to work with in the future but I just didn’t have room for that person, that character," he said.
The director also responded to Chris Pratt saying he cried hearing about the story of Guardians of the Galaxy 2, saying that it is indeed a very moving script.
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will hit theaters on May 5, 2017.
