Joseph Gordon-Levitt has admitted in the past that making a movie based on Neil Gaiman’s iconic Vertigo series Sandman will be tough, but he’s up for the challenge. The actor gave another update on the long-gestating project over the weekend, explaining why the project should come to the big screen, not television.

Gordon-Levitt did a Reddit AMA over the weekend to promote HitRECord on TV, but was asked about Sandman. Rather than ignore the question, JGL quickly responded.

“I think a big screen adaptation is a better idea and here's why. If you did the episodic version, I think it could very well end up as a not-as-good-version of what is already brilliant in the comics,” Gordon-Levitt said. “But by reworking the material into a big movie, Gaiman's brilliant characters and ideas get to take shape in a way they never have before.”

Gordon-Levitt also said that the budget for a television show wouldn’t allow them to fully capture the visual possibilities that a big-budget movie could.

“...I think Sandman deserves to look absolutely mind-blowingly awesome, just on a visual level, and as cinematic as some tv shows are becoming these days, they still can't compete with big movies visually, just because they can't afford to,” Gordon-Levitt said.

Earlier this month, the actor told MTV News that the project is still in the works and is coming along “slow but steady.”

There is some interesting news on the project coming from Hollywood, though. According to TheWrap, Warner Bros. has moved Sandman to New Line, which is now essentially just a studio label. New line is now the home for Warner Bros.’ genre films, including the upcoming It movie.
