Julia Stiles is expected to return in the next Bourne film, which will return Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass to the franchise. Meanwhile, Viggo Mortensen is reportedly being offered the villain role.
Stiles’ casting was first reported by Deadline, which noted that she will again play covert agent Nicky Parsons, a role she played in the first three Bourne films to help Jason Bourne.
TheWrap reported that Mortensen (The Lord of the Rings trilogy) has already been offered the new villain part in the film. Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina) is also being considered for another big part.
The new Bourne movie was made official in November 2014 and came as a surprise to many, since Universal was ready to make Jeremy Renner the franchise’s new star. The studio even made The Bourne Legacy in 2012, which made $276.1 million worldwide. Justin Lin was hired to direct that film’s follow-up.
After news broke that Damon and Greengrass wanted to return, Universal delayed the second Renner film and it’s not even clear if that is still in production.
Frank Marshall is producing the new Bourne movie, with Greengrass and Christopher Rouse writing the screenplay. The franchise launched in 2002 with The Bourne Identity and is based on the novels by Robert Ludlum.
