Universal’s Jurassic World is well on its way to earning the best June opening in film history. The film got off to a fantastic start last night with an $18.5 million opening.
Screenings of the first Jurassic World movie since 2001 began at 7 p.m. at over 3,200 theaters. As The Hollywood Reporter notes, the $18.5 million opening was Universal’s best late night start ever, passing Furious 7’s $15.8 million Thursday April release.
Jurassic World will have Universal’s widest release ever, screening at 4,273 theaters in North America starting today. It is expected to make at least $125 million, the biggest opening of the year behind Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Directed by Colin Trevorrow, Jurassic World revives the franchise that Steven Spielberg started with 1993’s Jurassic Park. The film stars Guardians of the Galaxy’s Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard and already opened in China, where it grossed $17.2 million in its first day.
Jurassic World will be out in 66 international territories this weekend, including most of western Europe, Russia, Korea, Mexico, Russia and the U.K.
