One film about a foul-mouthed talking teddy bear is enough for audiences. Three years after Seth MacFarlane burst onto the film scene with Ted, the comedy’s sequel was a disappointment at the box office.
But it wasn’t all bad for Universal. Jurassic World won the box office for the third straight weekend, grossing $54.2 million. It is now up to $500 million domestically, which is already more than what Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron has grossed. The Avengers sequel is only up to $452.4 million domestically.
Internationally, World has hit $1 billion. The film made another $82.5 million from foreign markets this weekend, bringing its worldwide total up to $1.2 billion.
Pixar’s Inside Out continues chugging along, adding $52.1 million in its second weekend. It’s already up to $184.9 million after just two weekends. That’s pretty crazy for a movie that is completely original. Last weekend, it set the record for a completely original idea with $91 million.
Ted 2 grossed just $32.9 million. That’s far lower than Ted’s $54.4 million opening in 2012. It also gives MacFarlane two consecutive flops, after A Million Ways To Live And Die In The West made just $43 million during its entire run domestically. Looks like his magic with animated TV shows has not followed him to the big screen.
Ted 2 started its box office run with $2.6 million on Thursday. It was expected to get close to $50 million, but the film sputtered out as the weekend wore on.
The other wide release of the weekend was Warner Bros./MGM’s dog movie Max. The film grossed $12.2 million, which was a bit higher than expected.
Melissa McCarthy’s Spy from Fox rounded out the Top 5 with $7.8 million. The film is up to $141.8 million since its June 5 release.
One of the noteworthy openings international openings of the weekend was Paramount’s Terminator Genisys, which hits theaters in the U.S. this weekend. The movie opened in a few markets and grossed $8.3 million.
