Dinosaurs are back and they aren’t going quietly. Halfway through the weekend and it is already clear that Jurassic World will have the biggest June weekend in film history. The movie’s astronomical Friday is already the best in Universal’s history, calming concerns that 14 years might have been too long to wait to resurrect the franchise.
On Thursday night, the film blasted off to $18.5 million Thursday night, beating Furious 7’s $15.8 million late night debut. Now, TheWrap is reporting that the film opened to $82.8 million Friday. That’s the best in studio history and third-best in film history overall (both Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 and Avengers: Age of Ultron had better first full days).
With that in mind, analysts are now projecting that the film will finish anywhere between $181 million and $200 million, notes The Hollywood Reporter. At the low end, the film sets the June record. At the high end, the film earns the second-best opening in history, just behind The Avengers.
Whatever the end result is, it will at least make back its production budget of $150 million in North America alone. But overseas, the film is doing just as amazingly well, taking in $130 million (with $50 million of that just from China).
