Marvel’s The Avengers might still have the box office crown at home, but Universal’s dinosaur romp Jurassic World earned the best overall global opening in film history. The movie became the first film ever to make over $500 million in just one weekend.

Universal’s early estimates for the film put it at $511.8 million worldwide, breaking the debut global record. In North America alone, the movie grossed an astonishing $204.5 million, which is just under Avengers’ $207.4 million.

While passing Man of Steel’s June opening record was always in World’s sights, analysts did not think that the film would beat Avengers: Age of Ultron. But Ultron “only” made $191.3 million when it opened in May. World also earned the third-best opening day in history on Friday with $82.8 million.

World also had dizzying numbers for 3D. As EW notes, 48 percent of the film’s domestic total came from 3D screenings. It made $20.6 million in IMAX, topping The Dark Knight Rises’ IMAX opening record.

There were other movies screening in theaters, but audiences forgot about them. Melissa McCarthy’s Spy took a huge tumble, making just $16 million in its second weekend. Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s San Andreas fell to $11 million in its third weekend. Insidious Chapter 3 ($7.3 million) and Pitch Perfect 2 ($6 million) rounded out the top five.

Final box office numbers will be out on Friday.
