After starring in Inherent Vice for Warner Bros., Katherine Waterston is taking a much more kid-friendly role. She will star opposite Eddie Redmayne in the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them movies, which take place in the same universe as Harry Potter.
Waterston was first linked to one of the two female lead roles in the movie last month. Based on those rumors, she beat out Kate Upton and The Great Gatsby’s Elizabeth Debicki.
Warner Bros. did confirm that Waterston will play Tina, a witch working in the U.S. She meers Newt Scamander (Redmayne) in New York City and joins him on his journey to find more magical beasts.
“Katherine Waterston is a rising star, who was a revelation in our film Inherent Vice, earning the praise of both critics and audiences,” Greg Silverman, President of Creative Development and Worldwide Production, Warner Bros. Pictures., said in a statement. “We are thrilled to have her back in the Warner Bros. family, especially in one of our most anticipated titles for 2016, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.”
David Yates, who helmed the last four Harry Potter movies, is directing the first Fantastic Beasts movie, with a script by J.K. Rowling. Redmayne officially scored the lead role earlier this month.
Fantastic Beasts hits theaters on Nov. 16, 2016.
Waterston’s credits include Inherent Vice, Boardwalk Empire, The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Her and the upcoming Steve Jobs.
